What We’re Reading is a new book display in our main room, created with both community and remembrance in mind. Its story begins with a group of friends who shared a book club — and the loss of a beloved member. Wanting to honor her love of reading while supporting the library she cherished, they envisioned a dedicated bookshelf featuring reader-recommended titles. Old favorites, new discoveries, fiction, nonfiction — every genre is welcome. The display is designed to introduce patrons to books they may not otherwise encounter, while celebrating the joy of sharing a good read with others.
We encourage you to discover a new favorite read — and to share one of your own with the rest of the community. If there’s a book you love, ask the staff for a recommendation card and write a brief note about why others should read it. We’ll gladly add your suggestion to the display.
WHAT'S NEW?
In Good Company Book Club is starting up again on Wednesday, September 16, at 5 pm. Our first read is Isaac’s Storm - A Man, a Time, and the Deadliest Hurricane in History, written by Erik Larson.
At the turn of the last century, Isaac Cline, chief weatherman for Texas, believed no storm could do serious harm to the city of Galveston, a fast growing metropolis on the Gulf Coast destined for great things. In September 1900 a massive hurricane proved him wrong, at great personal cost. The storm killed as many as 10,000 people in Galveston alone, stole the city’s future, and caused hurricane experts to revise their thinking about how hurricanes kill. The book won the American Meteorology Society’s prestigious Louis J. Battan Author’s Award. (eriklarsonbooks.com)
